A handful of operators have decided the shoulder months are a market of their own, and if you follow the people rather than the addresses, the summer calendar starts to look denser than the one you remember.
The interesting move this year is to treat the summer roster as a small map of who's investing in staying open. Three groups sit at the center of it.
Follow the Operators
The team behind Bar Cecil has extended its footprint next door. Beaton's at Bar Cecil offers expertly mixed cocktails, luxe bar bites, and a glamorous room, with the MICHELIN-recommended Bar Cecil team expanding their spirit into the space next door in a lively but relaxed setting ideal for a date night. It is open Wednesday through Sunday until midnight, with a late-night menu after 9 p.m. that includes a bar burger or filet mignon, and reservations are recommended, though a few tables are held for walk-ins. The same operators have quietly taken over daytime service at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Liv's is tucked into the lower level of the museum, serving flavorful bites for breakfast and lunch alongside a good mimosa, with outdoor seating next to the fountain in the sculpture garden, operated by Bar Cecil chef Gabriel Woo and recognized by Eater as a standout.
The Thompson has become the other anchor. Bar Issi runs on a maximalist "more is more" concept, with craft cocktails and Italian-inspired cuisine, located inside the Thompson hotel complex on the north end of downtown, and it has become a see-and-be-seen spot for locals and travelers, with reservations recommended and brunch available Friday through Sunday.
The third group to watch is the family behind El Patio and Felipe's. A new California cuisine concept called SoCal Sunset is opening at 369 N Palm Canyon in downtown Palm Springs, from a local restaurateur family. The venue takes the lower floor of a two-story Spanish Colonial-style building that formerly housed Georgie's Alibi Azul, with an elevated bar called After Hours planned for the upper floor, and the family behind El Patio in Palm Springs and La Quinta, as well as Felipe's, is running both. One address, two rooms, one operator. Worth watching how they stack the concepts.
The Smaller Rooms Getting Traction
Not everything worth trying comes from an established group. A few independents have earned quick loyalty.
- Coffeeism Co. A stylish downtown café pulling Intelligentsia espresso in a modern space, with a single-origin daily drip program and rotating iced drinks using ingredients like passion fruit and prickly pear, open daily 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Bougainvillea Fresh Cuisine. A small off-the-radar spot in a Warm Sands strip mall drawing rave reviews from picky locals, with a menu that pulls from Latin and Mediterranean traditions, reservations by phone, open daily for dinner with lunch Tuesday through Saturday.
- Ash & Vine. Set in a vine-covered historical building with a hidden courtyard, delivering elevated California cuisine with subtle global influences and a focus on seasonal ingredients.
The pattern here matters. The independents that are working are the ones with either a strong daytime program or a courtyard, both of which extend the useful hours of the property in the desert months.
Why the Evenings Feel Different This Year
The other half of the summer story is programmed rather than operated. Palm Springs has stacked more citywide events into June, July, and August than it has in recent memory, and most of them dovetail with dinner.
The Palm Springs International ShortFest runs June 23 through 29, the city-wide debut of XOXO Palm Springs runs June 11 through 22 with 12 days of arts and cultural experiences including architecture tours, gallery walks, outdoor film nights, and tribal cultural experiences, and Splash House returns August 7 through 9 and 14 through 16. XOXO gallery walks span the Lofts Art District, Backstreet Art District, Via Negocio Art District, and SOTA Arts District, and stage programming includes The Bent presenting The Lincoln Debate on June 18 and 19.
A new weekly draw opened on the calendar as well. Wanderlust Food Truck Fest brought its weekly community food truck festival to Palm Springs beginning Saturday, June 20 at the Sunrise Park parking lot off Ramon Road, hosting large-scale family-friendly events that support small businesses and encourage community gathering.
The Fourth of July programming is denser than usual, too. A Palm Springs POWER baseball game takes first pitch at 6:00 p.m., Concert in the Park at 7:00 p.m. features Turn The Page, a Bob Seger tribute band, and the Palm Springs Fireworks Spectacular begins at 9:15 p.m. sharp as a tribute to Independence Day and America's 250th birthday.
