Summer 2026 is quietly rewriting that pattern. A prominent El Paseo restaurant has broken with nearly a decade of tradition and stayed open through July. A 5.5-acre surf lagoon is filling its tanks between two of the city's golf courses. And by fall, a Los Angeles Lakers affiliate will be playing home games ten minutes up the road. The old logic of clearing out until October is starting to look outdated.

A tenth-summer restaurant finally stays open
The most telling signal came in mid-June. For the first time in its nearly decade-long history, The Fix on El Paseo announced it will remain open throughout the entire summer season, expanding its menu options to entice local diners and support the community. That is not a marketing pivot. That is a business owner reading the same tea leaves the rest of us are reading.
The context matters. As extreme summer temperatures begin to climb across the Coachella Valley, the seasonal exodus of tourists typically prompts many local businesses to scale back operations or close their doors entirely until autumn. However, one beloved Palm Desert staple is doing the exact opposite. The owner's stated reason was not tourist traffic. It was payroll. The unprecedented move is born out of a deep commitment to the restaurant's workforce. Operating a business in the desert during the off-season presents significant financial challenges, but owner James stated that his primary goal is to provide steady income and job security for his core employees during the year's slowest months.
The summer menu reads like a peace offering to residents who have watched too many "See you in November" signs go up. Diners in late May were reporting a two-course prix-fixe of a salad and a main for around $27, with live music on the patio. It is priced for people who might eat there twice a week, not once a season.
If The Fix's summer experiment works, expect other El Paseo operators to test the same math next year.
A wave pool opens between two golf courses
The second signal is bigger, both physically and strategically. DSRT Surf is scheduled to open its lagoon in late summer 2026 on the Desert Willow property, and the specs are not modest.

The lagoon has already been tested. DSRT Surf in Palm Desert hosted its inaugural super session for elite surfers on July 1, drawing Rob Machado, Griffin Colapinto, Zeke Szekely, and Josh Kerr. For residents, the practical read is this: by August, Desert Willow becomes a place you go for something other than golf, and the traffic profile of Cook Street north of Country Club is going to change.

First, from June through September, outdoor seating becomes genuinely uncomfortable after 11 a.m., with valley temperatures regularly exceeding 110°F during peak summer afternoons. Any patio plan should start at sunset or later. Second, the misters at Pacifica are not a gimmick. They meaningfully change what a nine o'clock table feels like in July.

From expansive estates boasting private lazy rivers and pickleball courts to mid-century modern gems, this season offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the desert's most prestigious accommodations for less.
The consequence for locals is that summer weekend traffic on El Paseo is not what it was ten years ago. A five o'clock reservation at Mastro's in July is a different experience than a five o'clock reservation at Mastro's in February, and the price of the same room at Hotel Paseo is a different number too. If you have out-of-town family who have been threatening to visit, this is the season when it is easiest to host them well.
What arrives when the temperature drops
The fall calendar is loaded, and a couple of items on it change the character of the immediate area.
The destination is proud to welcome the Coachella Valley Lakers to their new home at Acrisure Arena. The Los Angeles Lakers' G League affiliate begins its inaugural season this fall, adding a legendary new chapter to our valley's professional sports scene. That is a season's worth of home games about fifteen minutes from most Palm Desert addresses.
Immediately after that, the season begins in early October as the Epson Tour Championship (Oct 1–4) returns to the Indian Wells Golf Resort. As the season finale of the "Road to the LPGA," the stakes couldn't be higher for these elite athletes competing on the Players Course. If you can walk a golf course in October weather, this is a rare chance to see tour-quality play up close without leaving the valley.
Neither event is a reason to rush the summer. They are a reason to notice that the shoulder season is filling in with things that used to require a plane ticket.
The read for residents
Every one of these updates points the same direction. The Fix is betting on year-round locals. DSRT Surf is betting that a wave lagoon works in a market that was built on greens and clay. Acrisure Arena is betting that professional basketball has a permanent home here. None of these are seasonal bets.
